About the Galore Creek Project

Project Background

Located in northwest British Columbia, the Galore Creek project hosts one of the largest undeveloped copper-gold-silver deposits in the world. The Galore Creek project is managed by the Galore Creek Mining Corporation (GCMC) which is held in a 50/50 partnership between Newmont Goldcorp Corporation (Newmont Goldcorp) and Teck Resources Limited (Teck).

Teck is Canada’s largest diversified resource company. It has established world-scale copper, steelmaking coal, zinc, and energy businesses with major operating and project development sites throughout North and South America.

Newmont Goldcorp is the world’s leading gold company as measured by assets, prospects and people, and is an industry leader in value creation.

The Opportunity for Galore Creek

An opportunity was identified to look at new ways to share details of the project with internal and external stakeholders without having to travel to the site. The remote nature of this site, combined with substantial amounts of project information, a desire to restore momentum to the project, and a constant pursuit for ways to innovate, led Teck to engage with LlamaZOO to develop a solution to address several key project and communication challenges for the Galore Creek Project:

Remote Assets

Remote projects are costly to get to, logistically challenging, and can introduce challenges in managing health and safety risks.

Siloed Information

Mine planning and project development information is often located across non-interoperable software packages and different departments, not accessible by all stakeholders, and updated with varying frequency.

Stagnated Projects

Projects only move forward when appropriate resources are in place and internal and external stakeholders give them attention. Without a compelling way to tell the story, it can be challenging to build and maintain interest in project development.

LlamaZOO’s Approach to Problem Solving

We worked closely with Teck to develop just such a solution: a 1:1 scale Virtual Reality digital replica of the Galore Creek development area that visualizes approximately 30,000 km2 of the project and surrounding area, in visually stunning high definition.

The initial solution was planned, developed, and delivered to Teck in only 8 weeks. Within months of receiving it, Teck was able to reduce forecast site visit costs by between $100,000 and $250,000 dollars, while accelerating the project timeline.

“This Virtual Reality digital replica of the project should be used unabashedly as a communication tool across all levels of engagement. Up, down, left, and right”

LlamaZOO’s Approach to Collaboration

The goal for this solution was to make a positive impact on Teck’s (and now Teck and Newmont Goldcorp) business objectives for Galore Creek, not to be a flashy demonstration of AR/VR technology.

The teams from LlamaZOO and Teck began with a collaborative planning phase to design a solution that directly addressed Galore Creek’s characteristics and communication challenges.

Introducing MineLife

We built this solution on our MineLife technology framework. The framework enables us to combine and integrate any data type into a single, unified visual repository, and significantly decreases the time and costs of development typically associated with a solution of this depth and functionality.

Immense amounts of data were integrated to create a 1:1 scale, interactive, centralized, holistic visualization that all project stakeholders could leverage to become more aligned, unlocking significant value.

Surface Data

30,000 km2 worth of Geographic Information System (GIS), Digital Elevation Model (DEM), shape files, also satellite imagery, drone photography, and other surface data including roads, infrastructure, government information such as waterways, mountain regions, and land holdings are integrated to build a lifelike replica of the entire development that can be navigated around.

Drill Holes

60+ years and 393,000 meters of drill hole data that was imported from a variety of software packages can now be toggled and visualized to interactively explore the history of the project.

Planned Open Pits & Ore Bodies Directly from Industry Standard Software

The size and positioning of Galore Creek’s bornite and chalcopyrite ore bodies, and planned mine pits, are visualized in 3D space, imported from Seequent’s Leapfrog Geo and Maptek’s Vulcan – painting an accurate, clear picture for all stakeholders of the project’s scale and potential value.

Camps, Facilities, and Infrastructure

The LlamaZOO solution integrates the infrastructure of the project and surrounding area to visualize the existing and planned locations of everything from camps, to facilities, highways, airports, and beyond.

Regions and Waypoints

The solution also visualizes environmental information such as flora, fauna and biodiversity information, First Nations territory, communities of interest information, and other regions of interest such as regional, provincial and federal parks. Predefined waypoints enable immediate transport to any of the project’s key data.

“Our expertise is in bringing clarity to complex data. It’s exciting to work so closely with Teck to discover just how applicable AR/VR is for the mining industry, and the significant value it can create.”

Reducing Site Visits

The Virtual Reality experience enables internal stakeholders such as engineers, business planners, environmental and community teams, executives, and external stakeholders to immerse themselves in the project, and interact with it through all the years of its life cycle; whether thousands of feet in the air, or down on the ground.

At Galore Creek, now that a fully functional MineLife has been established, it is possible to bring a much broader and larger audience to the project site at a much lower overall cost.  Over time, the cost of travel and time associated with visiting the site, could be reduced by >$250,000. From employees and contractors, to investors, community stakeholders including government and First Nations – Teck uses this solution as a viable replacement and supplement to costly and time-consuming physical site visits.

Enhancing Communication, Across All Stakeholders

Engineers, geologists, and executives can now communicate out of one centralized data source. Data visualizations can be viewed “on the ground” from any angle, unlocking new perspectives, surfacing potential issues earlier, and speeding up iteration through quicker communication.

Networked sessions enable colleagues and experts to visit the mine site and collaborate, no matter where they are on the globe.

In addition to the Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, and desktop options for accessing this solution, we also integrate features for Teck to easily record, replay, and export high resolution screen captures and fly-throughs.

“MineLife has provided an innovative platform from which the Galore Creek story can be communicated. Anyone can self-navigate various aspects of the project through immersive visualization in virtual reality and related video capture.”

Telling the Galore Creek Project Story

This solution provides Galore Creek Mining Corporation, Newmont Goldcorp and Teck with a centralized platform to present available data and plans in its current state. As much of the critical information related to the Galore Creek project is highly 3-dimensional by nature, the VR, AR, and desktop applications become even more powerful.
